Location
Turkey Beach is a small coastal township
approximately 50kms south-east of Gladstone, 10 km north of Bororen in
Queensland, Australia. Located on the
shores of pristine estuary waterways within Rodds Harbour it is a fisherman’s
paradise.
There is a well signed intersection along the Bruce Highway and this will take you along the 24kms of sealed road to reach the township. Turkey Beach is a laid back coastal fishing community that sits in the protected Rodds Bay. At the 2011 census, Turkey Beach had a population of 468.
Turkey Beach is geographically closer than virtually anywhere else in Queensland to the southern end of the Great Barrier Reef. The name Turkey relates directly back to the bustard or bush turkey shot by Captain Cook’s crew back in 1770 when they discovered the area aboard HMS Endeavour.
The area features large areas of mangrove inlets, creeks and estuaries that provide excellent fishing and some of the best mud crabbing areas in Queensland. The Eurimbula National Park preserves the rugged peninsular between the bay and the Coral Sea where Rodds Bay is home to a Dugong Sanctuary. Nearby Pancake Creek is a wilderness park located in the lee of Bustard Head providing a popular anchorage for yachts and boats.
